The Bend First Presbyterian Church Foundation has helped extend the ministry of First Presbyterian Church of Bend far beyond Central Oregon. One enduring example is the church’s long-standing partnership in San Lucas Tolimán, Guatemala. This relationship continues to grow through service, education, and community development.

Since 2007, more than 250 members of First Presbyterian have participated in mission trips to Guatemala, building deep connections with local partners and residents. These trips are supported by the Foundation’s commitment to global mission and long-term investment in ministries that promote dignity, opportunity, and flourishing.

Recent mission teams have worked alongside organizations such as Stoves for Guatemala and Friends of San Lucas, contributing hands-on labor to projects that include new housing, classrooms, and community infrastructure. In the foothills outside San Lucas Tolimán, volunteers have helped prepare homes for families, construct classrooms, and support a developing community designed to serve up to 1,000 families, with space for gardens, livestock, and a school for children with special needs.

The Foundation also supports education initiatives through the San Lucas Tolimán Scholars program, which helps students continue their education beyond sixth grade. This opportunity is not otherwise available to many families. Mission participants regularly spend time with these scholars, reinforcing the church’s shared commitment to education as a pathway toward long-term stability and hope.

In addition to construction and education, the church’s partnerships in Guatemala support women’s shelters, community centers, and libraries, responding to local needs identified by community leaders themselves. These relationships reflect the Foundation’s emphasis on mutuality, sustainability, and accompaniment rather than one-time aid.

Through faithful stewardship and investment, the Bend Presbyterian Church Foundation helps make this ongoing work possible. Together with mission partners and volunteers, the Foundation supports ministries that widen hearts, deepen faith, and contribute to the flourishing of communities near and far.
